I've cropped this image to a vertical letterbox format. How do you think it compares?

For me, you have cropped too hard. It is a shame that the bush/tree is also a dominant feature. Because of my seating positoin, the moon is very high in the tall frame, therefore, my eyes are continuually drawn to the bush/tree because I know it is there, spoiling the nice curve of the woodwork down from the left.
Agree with Peter about the high moon - easy to move it down. Before any astronomers get all aerated, I'm looking at this pictorially and not astronomically. I quite like it because it's quirky and a bit surreal. I see three main elements - cross, moon and bush so we have a triangle. I would bring the moon to the spot that the cross is pointing to which would probably be very near the upper left third.
I prefer this composition as you have created a stronger triangle of the main elements. Some could possibly see a religious metaphor linking the cross with the heavens? I notice that Ceres has been shifted though LOL.
