Ace of Clubs 2013 (or Baldricks cunning plan)

Today (17th Feb) Neath and 16 other clubs took part in the 2013 Ace of Clubs, hosted by Gwynfa CC. The format (for the uninitiated) is that we had a bank of 30 projected images that we previously sent to the organiser.

On the day the first round of 10 images (the order was sent with the 30 images) are shown to 3 judges, scoring from 2 to 5. For Round 2 we have to select 10 more images (no more than 3 per photographer and no more than 4 natural history) knowing what sort of images suit the judges. The scores from rounds 1 & 2 are then added together and the top 8 clubs compete for the Trophy in the final. The remainder of the clubs compete for the Plate. If you get through to the Final (round 3) you then need to select 15 images from your bank of 30 (no more than 4 per photographer and no more than 5 natural history). That is the format.

This is how not to do it —–

Round 1 we scored 105 out of a possible 150 finishing in joint 9th

Round 2 we scored 107 out of a possible 150, finishing joint 7th

Our total score of 112 got us into the final (just)

Then Haydn (Baldrick) Thomas DPAGB AFIAP had a cunning plan, we didn’t have a chance of winning the competition (it hurt when we were looking at the 10′s to get images through for round 3 and the table opposite were overheard to say ‘Oh well, we might have to start looking at the 12′s’) so we decided to try the 10 untried images we had left and add 5 of the higher scoring images from rounds 1 & 2, s**t or bust as they say.

It didn’t work, and our score of 159 out of a possible 225 put us in last place (10 points behind our nearest rivals and 30 points behind the winners).

Hornbill 2013

Neath Photographic Society is proud to host The Hornbill Challenge 2013.

‘Whether you are a seasoned campaigner or fresh to photography, this is your opportunity to show off your images.’

The Hornbill Challenge is open to photographers with addresses in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and also BFPO addresses.

This popular photographic competition is now supported by the British Photographic Exhibitions (BPE).

As a member exhibition of the BPE circuit, all images accepted into this exhibition count towards BPE Crown Awards.

‘Colour Open’
‘Monochrome Open’
‘Industry’
‘Natural History

The competition is for projected images only so if you are new to photographic competitions there is no fiddly printing involved. So, if you believe that you have a winning image why not have a go and enter the competition using one of the following methods:

Pixels 2012

A good afternoon out with some club mates and some great images on view from 36 Clubs, that was how I spent Saturday afternoon. The Judge Mr Dave Mason from the Arena Group, London gave clean and short comments on some excellent images. For the full results see Results . We finished in joint 11th place with 68 points, top honours being shared by Tenby and Inn Focus both on 77 points. The Trophy went to Tenby on a countback system (Tenby having 3 20′s whilst Inn Focus had 2).

Pixels 2012, Saturday 3rd November

Gwynfa Pixels 2012 is this Saturday. Thirty six clubs have entered some fantastic images and there are many possible winners. The Doors will open at 1.45pm for tea & coffee. (Due to setting up considerations, entry will not be possible before that time). The competition commences 2.30pm and will be judges by Dave Mason of the Arena Group. A full Charlie’s Angels Buffet has been arranged for half time. The competition is expected to end around 5.30pm. The venue is the Community Centre, Talbot Green.

There will be a selection of prints on the 23rd October to represent Neath in the Bridgend Print Battle (6 prints) and The Stanley Chell Trophy (4 prints). You are invited to submit a maximum of 3 prints, mounted on a 500mm x 400mm board, any subject, colour or monochrome. Please bring you prints either this Tuesday (16th) or on the selection night. These two competitions are highly regarded in the WPF and your best work is needed.

Tuesday 2nd October

Members are invited to bring 3 Prints along for selection for forthcoming inter club competitions. The prints should be mounted as normal and only have the title on the back.

Remember that the 2nd is also the hand in for Competition 2 ‘Night’. A maximum of 1 Colour Print, 1 Mono Print, 1 Colour PI and 1 Mono PI are allowed. Please either send the PI’s to me or put them on a flash drive in a folder marked ’ Night’. If you are submitting prints please try to include a digital version of the prints in a folder clearly identified as Prints.

6 Way Battle Results

A packed Clubhouse was the venue for the first of our 6 Way Battles last night. Representatives of Aberdare, Bridgend, Crai, Morriston and Pyle & Porthcawl filled the club to capacity. Our judge was Mr Gareth Martin AWPF CPAGB and he delivered his comments with his usual brand of humour and story telling. To make matters more interesting Mr Martin wanted the scoresheets produced with no clubnames so only the relevant club members knew their standing. The last image of the night decided the final outcome with a repeat of last years draw between Bridgend CC and Neath.
